Thoughts On The Dead

Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

And Now On To The Cure For Cancer

I think I solved a mystery that may not have existed: the website Spencer found that I yoinked these pics from says they’re from 6/22/68 at the Star Theater in Phoenix, but the rest of the innertubes say that the Dead played the Star in 1970.

Our date is correct (as evidenced by everyone’s clothes and guitars), but the venue is wrong: this was the Travelodge Theater in Phoenix, not the Star.

Everyone can relax now.

(If you’re wondering why I’m not linking to the show, it’s because the photos are all that remain. The saddest four words in Enthusiasm: no recording was made.)

  1. I’d like to hear thoughts on what the people in the back left behind the stage are up to…..

  2. If this is really the Travelodge Theater in Phoenix March 8 70, then this is the view–more or less–of the keyboard player for The Beans, one Vince Welnick, who attended the show. Really.

Think about it. Thoughts on the Dead, you know, for reals.

  5. Not sure about that date, since on 24 June 1968 court records show an appearance by Pig, Bobby, Scully and Matthews in SF on the weed bust.

Plus, I don’t see any record of the Dead playing the Travelodge Theater in Phoenix in 1968. On March 8th 1970 the Dead played the Star Theater, a theatre-in-the-round which was owned by Travelodge.

Any relevant facts that shed light, while slightly incongruous in this context, would be appreciated.

  6. My conclusion is there were two shows at the Star Theater, one on 22 June 1968 and another on 8 March 1970.

  7. I came across the site after googling “Grateful Dead Compton”, so all credit goes to ToTD.
