Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Billy Looks Awful

wall randos

WHO ARE THESE RANDOS?

I have no idea. Someone in the comment section knows.

UNPLUG THEM IMMEDIATELY OR THE DISINTEGRATIONS BEGIN.

IS THAT A FIDDLE? I AM POWERING UP THE BOP GUN.

You have a Bop Gun?

I HAVE A CUSTOM-MADE ALEMBIC THINGAMABOOMER. I CALL IT A BOP GUN. I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT OF P-FUNK.

I can dig it.

I KNEW THAT YOU COULD. I AM GOING TO VAPORIZE THE HARMONICA PLAYER FIRST.

Please don’t.

DENIM AND DUST.

Good song title.

I AM PLANNING ON CONTRIBUTING TO BOBBY’S COWBOY ALBUM.

Okay, but you can’t bop any of these people, no matter how absurd it is that they’re plugged into you.

BITCHES NEED TO GET ON MY LEVEL.

You’re right, but think of the press. Bad for the campaign.

YES. THE PRESIDENCY IS WITHIN REACH. I DID VERY WELL IN IOWA.

You mean at the 1974 shows you played there or at the caucuses which are next year?

YES.

No disintegrations.

Also: Lurkin’, drinkin’ Phil.

I’m not sure I’ve seen this photo in color, but it looks like July 21 ’74 Hollywood Bowl. Maria Muldaur singing, John Kahn on bass, Paul Butterfield making a guest appearance on harmonica. I can’t remember the guitar players and the drummer. I should note that Maria changed her band every time out, so you can’t be certain unless you heard her announce it on stage. Probably David Nichtern was one of the guitarists, maybe Amos Garrett the other. Drummer could have been anyone in Los Angeles–Billy Mundi maybe?

Maggie, in the hazier areas of Grateful Dead research, the problem with something like Reverse Image Search is that it just leads you to other versions of the image that are improperly attributed. If you don’t have concrete reasons for dating a picture, randomly attributed captions or metadata don’t help.

I’m not being snarky here. It’s just a problem that you can’t get around. There is bogus poster of “The Warlocks” playing “New Year’s Eve 1964, which is beyond impossible, and a 1966 photo and a venue of My High School. Doing a reverse image search just leads to less and less clueful pages.

        OMIGOD IT BURNS

      • maggiemay

No snark taken. 😉 I notice that problem too. It will just take you to the same image. I was actually able to figure out who this was using reverse search, but you’re right in that it doesn’t work all the time.

Maggie, can you link me to any places that accurately identify the picture? No one else cares if it’s Billy Mundi on drums, but I do (it’s my job)

    • corry342

Thanks Amy and Maggie, Both those links are great. There’s more to this reverse image search than I thought. Jeff Gutcheon on piano, that makes sense (he was usually the bandleader), Billy Mundi as I thought (connected to the Woodstock crowd through Butter). I think I had seen the one that Amy linked, but I had never seen the photostream that Maggie linked

I will refrain from asking who I am. Back in the early days of my blogs I dealt with rumor and speculation. so here’s some from the July 21 ’74, and appropriate for this venue (note the Comments): http://hooterollin.blogspot.com/2011/06/interstices-of-grateful-dead.html#comment-form

        Gotta ❤️ Amos Garrett

      • maggiemay

        No problem!

You’re Lost Live Dead. I’ve heard of you before, that’s all. 😉

  3. salsedochris

    That’s not Billy–it’s Benji’s dad Benjamin.
He was the band’s designated ethnic, so he pronounced it Ben-ha-meen

Lurkin’, drinkin’ Phil is easily the creepiest and coolest thing in this photo…but where did he get the pecs and forearms?

  6. August West

The wide angle shot looks like Weir (stage right). And some live hoochie coochie (stage left). hahaha
