Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

If You Have Got The Mind

We have been tasked, Enthusiasts. FoTotD (and novelist and one of the only New York Times columnists that doesn’t make me want to drown myself in a river) Jenny Boylan asks for our ears. Here is the question before us:

What is that noise at 00:22?

Dr. Boylan believes it to be a dog’s bark; her clue being that her dog–and we are assured that this is a good dog, a truthful dog–responds to the sound as though it were another dog.

Others, with far paltrier resumes and dogs that can fairly be called liars, have offered that the sound is that of the wooden leg of a chair or stool barking across a similarly wooden floor.

So now, as with all of my homework, I will let you do it. Whaddya think?

Jesus Christ, I think it’s been a quarter-century since I listened to a Grateful Dead studio track. No exaggeration. I kinda forgot these things even existed.

They’re just kinda beside the point, aren’t they? And this belief make me feel bad, knowing how hard the Dead worked on their albums (at first), but the records simply don’t matter.

Have you asked the Canadians to ask “The Canadian”

Get David L to pull out the audio from that one track.

    • Tor Haxson

Seriously David L worked on the Rhino Re-issue, does the re-issue have the noise.

      • Murray

The noise is on the 2010 remaster as well as the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab vinyl reissue. All at ~22-23 seconds.

        and Phaeliks.

        • Tor Haxson

How did ToTD not reward Mean Green with CoTD for this?

He had better reward the greatness, or I will change my handle to Phaeliks

          • Thoughts On The Dead

I have no idea what you hockey fuckers are on about. The only Ungar I’ve heard of is Stuey “The Kid” Ungar.

That is Mr. Philip Chapman Lesh dragging something fleshy expeditiously down the strings of his bass guitar.

It sounds like a glass slide being laid down on the strings (emphasis on the low E).
