Everyone thinks of The Clash as punk princes, and they certainly were, but they were a great live band who could really play. I saw them on the London Calling tour at the Fox-Warfield in San Francisco in March 1980, and they absolutely rocked the house. Although their tempos were fast, the songs were pretty far from the album versions, with the great Mickey Gallagher on keyboards joining Joe, Mickey, Paul and Topper.
There was no tour for Sandinista, and by the time Combat Rock came around they were huge and played San Francisco Civic. Still great, of course, but not as intimate and intense as what had come before. And those at the Warfield who had seen the Clash at the Fillmore in ’78 (then called The Elite Club) said it had been even better than ’80, just as it always is.
Old hippies would be well advised to take a close look at Joe Strummer—“do you think it’s funny, turning rebellion into money” from “White Man At Hammersmith Palais.”

My sister went to the Kezar Pavilion show (Kezar Pavilion was the small basketball arena associated with Kezar Stadium in San Francisco). It was 1979, I think. One for the ages, apparently.
