Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Reed At The Library

If you’re in New York and looking for the kind of rock and roll thrill that can only be found while quietly looking at a dead guy’s junk, then go see Lou Reed’s archives. The New York Public Library recently acquired them from Laurie Anderson–she called Bobby to see if he was interested, but he pretended to not remember her–and will be exhibiting selection at the main branch. (The one from the beginning of Ghostbusters.) There are hundreds of libraries in the NYPL system, so having your event in the building with the lions is an honor. Congratulations to Laurie and the Reeds, and also once again to Phil and Jill.

What might you see?

  • Napkin with “Sweet Ann Francine Nancy Jane” scribbled on it.
  • More empty pill bottles than you’ve ever seen in your life.
  • Receipt for box full of human feces he mailed to Lester Bangs.
  • Complete collection of mint-condition issues of Outside magazine.
  • Several white wigs that Andy Warhol thought he had lost.
  • Owner’s manual to 1984 Honda scooter.
  • Bunch of Sovereign Citizen books that Mo Tucker sent him.
  • Letter from Martin Scorsese about how Johnny Depp should star in a movie adaptation of Lou’s 1989 album, New York, called Dirty Boulevard. (All of that is completely true because of fucking course Johnny Depp is involved.)
  • Polaroids of Iggy Pop’s dick.
  • Members Only jacket, tan.
  • Surprisingly large collection of memorabilia from Charles and Di’s wedding.
  • The world’s only Doug Yule tee-shirt. (Lou had it made special just to be a dick.)

A great deal of authentic historical luster.

A man in a dinner jacket looks for bed.

    Buenos nachos amigos…

I’ll fight Laurie for that Doug Yule t-shirt.

Can I hip you to this, brothers of the C-Section ?

    A Cave called Dark Star,

Move that Cave to Little Aleppo is what I would do if I had a “Geology sheath”.

Actually with a Geology Sheath I would raise just a small subset of Florida, so ToTD will have an island when he retires.

I will be in San Fran for two weeks starting Sunday.

    Need some travel advice.

Where can I find a public restroom in San Rafael?
    Which way to Mount Tam?

Good Mong Kok–dim sum bakery on Stockton. They will not speak English. You will not speak Cantonese, and instead will point at many things. Enough food to overfill 2 adults will cost $8. Go and eat it in Washington Square Park.

El Farolito taqueria on 24th, in the Mission District–Order no less than an al pastor burrito and the super suiza quesadilla. Taqueria Cancun on Mission and 19th in a pinch. The habanero salsa from Papalote Grill off of Valencia is worth buying to take home.

Zazie in Cole Valley for brunch. There will be a line, but it’s worth it if you have the time and desire for $15 eggs. There is roasted garlic in the roasted potatoes.

Arizmendi Bakery on Valenica, near 24th.

Vesuvio (North Beach) is seconded. Look for the picture of Allen Ginsberg sitting in what may be your same seat at the bar.

Zuni Cafe on Market (never on a Monday) has a roast chicken that (a) takes 1 hour to prepare; (b) cannot be ordered in advance; and (c) has been worth the wait for going on 30 years.

Alembic (bar) in the Haight. You will be in or around the Haight, why not go to the bar with the best beer, notwithstanding the name. The food is decent too.

Hollow (coffee), Irving and 19th. Get a large americano and walk through Golden Gate Park–check out the various places your favorite band played free shows, or where its lead guitarist was popped for possession in his car.

Finally, and most seriously (as in if you can go to only one):

Brenda’s Creole Soul Food in the Tenderloin. Arrive early or plan to wait, but this is worth the wait. You’ll want the beignet flight, and maybe more after you try your first crawfish pastry. Someone has to order the shrimp and grits with tomato jam. Bloody Marys with Old Bay and okra.
