Musings on the Most Ridiculous Band I Can't Stop Listening To

Tab Hunter

Once again, and as always, TotD has accumulated a flotilla of open tabs that may or may not be of interest to anyone, but I am sick of looking at and will therefore burden you with them:

  1. This rather fun article from The Austin Chronicle on the history of “choogle.” While I still contend that I invented the word, the author maintains that it’s been around a while and John Fogerty actually came up with it, and by “came up with” I mean “stole from a black guy.”

  2. A long-lost letter from Neal Cassady to Jack Kerouac has been found and placed up for auction. It’s at Christie’s, and I am assuming none of us will be able to afford it. The sucker’s 40 pages long; as you might assume, Cassady was out of his gourd on benzedrine. Here’s a piece:

A masterpiece.

  1. I haven’t watched this; I’ve been meaning to read about, and then make things up about, the MTV promotion from 1987, Day of the Dead. After the video-based popularity of Touch of Grey, and the explosion in crowd size that came with it, the channel devoted a whole day to the band; predictably it led to disaster.

  1. If you’ve got $30 grand, and are a moron, you can buy this contract for the 1985 Twilight Zone remake signed by the whole band. If you’re broke and just want a chuckle, you can click on that link and read how the seller is not only charging fifteen dollars for shipping (on a $30,000 item), but he’s also snippy about it in the description.

  2. This tab wasn’t open–I went and got it just for you, Enthusiasts–but 8/12/72 from the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento is a worthwhile use of your ears. There’s no such thing as a bad ’72, and if you listen to this particular ’72 it will for the length of your relationship be your favorite ’72. More than one unfortunate cut in the tape, but the mix is good and the Stella Blue is one of the best I’ve ever heard, with Garcia singing sweetly; it’s a quieter version than usual; it is light and ethereal and it deserves your time.

That Stella is beautiful. Your suggestions are always appreciated. He’s slow and soft and great too.

All of those 08-xx-72 shows are practice runs for 08-27-72, which means they are all great!

True, would love to find a clean copy of the San Jose show on the 20th.

And how much is Irsay gonna pay for the letter?
